Multiple law enforcement agencies aided in executing federal search warrants across Alabama Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI confirmed.
Authorities called a 3 p.m. news conference where they revealed details on the operation, which involved the execution of 14 federal search warrants targeting a “trans-national organized entity” believed to be conducting drug trafficking, human smuggling, document fraud, and other “financial crimes.”
Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama Kevin Davidson and Homeland Security Investigations Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Steven Shrink confirmed search warrants were executed in Autauga, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lee, and Macon counties.
The operation focused on apprehending one particular fugitive, Cesar Campos-Reyes, 52, of Auburn. He’s accused of fraud related to the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and for hiring illegal aliens.
Authorities say Campos-Reyes, who is believed to be in the country illegally, was indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts of bank fraud, four counts of wire fraud, and one count of money laundering, with the indictment being unsealed Tuesday.
