A former Kentucky detective has been sentenced to just under three years in jail for using excessive force during the botched police raid which killed Breonna Taylor.
Brett Hankison, who fired 10 shots during the raid but didn’t hit anyone, was the only officer on the scene charged in the 26-year-old’s death on March 13, 2020.
He is the first person sentenced to jail time in the case, which rocked the city of Louisville and spawned weeks of street protests against police brutality at the time.
US District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings sentenced Hankison on Monday, saying she was ‘startled’ that more people weren’t injured in the raid.
She rejected a US Department of Justice recommendation that the disgraced detective should be spared jail, saying this would not be ‘appropriate’.
Hankison was sentenced to 33 months in prison along with three years of supervised probation. He will not report directly to prison. Jennings said the Bureau of Prisons will determine where and when he starts his sentence.
